The cafe was actually started in 1974 by a woman named Kay Moran. Around that time I lived on the third floor and for awhile I worked in the cafe. Before it was known for comedy, it had some of the best music in the city with groups such as Leila and The Snakes, Pearl Harbor and the Explosions, and a great jazz ensemble that often played on weekend afternoons, Pinocchio.

Sitting here with my 6 yr old daughter telling her that the man she is watching on “True Jackson” and the voice of her favorite, spongebob square pants used to hang out at daddies work and crack him up.
I feel so lucky to have been part of that whole scene for a few years. I still think about you all so very often.
    Cheers,
    Chris

I lived in the Haight from 1986 to 1999 and walked by the Other Cafe all the time. I now regret never having seen a show, but I remember one night walking by with my roommate after getting off the N streetcar. My friend, a boisterous type, started waving his arms wildly and yelled to get the attention of the comedian who was performing inside. He did, and we could see him point at us and say something about a “fast pass,” the San Francisco transit pass, and people laughed. I was embarrassed then, now glad I have that memory.
